How to Web Check-in

Most of the Popular airlines provide a web check-in facility. As mentioned in my earlier post Web Check-in saved my day… , Web check-in saves you lots of trouble. In this post I intend to give some general directions of how to go about doing a web check-in.

Book Review: The Shiva Triology by Amish

Let me begin this review by congratulating Amish on the fabulous success that his three titles, namely The Immortals of MeluhaThe Secrets of The Nagas and The Oath of The Vayuputras have achieved. He is no doubt one of the best story tellers of our age. The three books present us with the life of the main protagonist, Siva, his triumphs and catastrophes.

My review of Xiaomi MI4.

This is an unorthodox review of the MI4. I mean you will find a lot of reviews good and bad about the phone, its technicalities and features. This is my personal review of the phone after using it for a day.

First off, the MI4 is larger than it looks in the picture on the Filpkart or MI.com site. I mean if you could mentally visualize the size when they say 5 inch screen then good for you. Otherwise it was a surprise for me since I was expecting a smaller size (as compared to OnePlus One which was another candidate I was reviewing); you could say the size is almost similar to the Samsung Galaxy Grand duos (my wife has one so I compared).

Web Check-in saved my day…

I had been travelling to Bengaluru this week and the cab that was supposed to pick me up from my residence got late. On top of that there was punishing traffic in Pune and suburbs due to all folks leaving for their homes just after the days work. I could reach the airport just half an hour before the departure time (they close the counters 45 minutes before the departure time). As I entered the terminal there already was a lot of cursing and swearing going on at the counter; the ground staff was adamant. They were not giving these people boarding pass since that was the policy and they were just doing their job. I was sure I was going to miss my flight as I walked towards one of the counters. As I approached the counter the ground staff person there started waving in negative suggesting that I could not get the boarding pass since I was late…but then I produce my printed copy of the boarding pass and the guy smiled at me. He said “Sir since you are web checked-in you may proceed to the aircraft for boarding”. Although he did not allow me to check-in my luggage and I had to lose a scissors from shaving kit at the Security hole. The gist of the story is it is always good habit to web check-in. I am listing down some of the dos and don’ts of travelling by air for the benefit of the readers.

Dos:

  1. Always web check-in. It allows you to be a little late than the prescribed 1 hour check-in time before the departure. So if you are travelling from a city with heavy traffics or travelling during traffic hours it would give you some breather.
  2. Plan to reach early to the airport. You could do a lot of things from window shopping to eating or reading a book, browsing internet (if you are at an international airport you also get free access to internet on the machines provided at the airport) or just watching people. It’s not such a boring place after all.
  3. Always carry a government issued photo id proof (typically true in India).
  4. Remove Laptops, Tablets, mobile phones, wallets and jackets in the container provided at the security hole. You can use two containers if you want there is no restriction on that. With habit you will be able to pass the security pretty fast. In some international airports (if you are transiting through one) you also have to remove waist belts and shoes.

Don’ts:

  1. If you are travelling light like on a business trip, do not carry restricted items in your luggage so that you don’t have to check them in. this will save time at destination since you would not have to wait at the baggage carousel for your luggage (some airports have really poor carousel facility and might take you at-least 30-45 minutes before you see your luggage coming out on the belt).
  2. If you have checked in luggage, don’t hurry to disembark the aircraft in order to catch the first bus to the terminal. It takes a lot of time to unload the luggage and bring to the baggage carousel. It’s better to sit in the comfort of the airplane chair than standing helplessly beside the carousel.

There are many other trivial things you can do to make your travel fuss-free. I have listed just those that I found to be benefitting. Happy flying!

What is a good Demo?

I have been attending a sketching workshop recently and the instructor, who is actually a professional painter, got into conversation with me during lunch. During the initial introductions she had learnt that I was an instructor myself and by profession, so she asked me if I had some inputs for her. I had in-fact observed her during her demo and had some pointers for her. Although, I did mention that hers and mine was a totally different domain. Demo in a technical training was pretty straight forward as against the demo in an art workshop.

But still this discussion got me thinking on what was a perfect demo? How do you ensure complete attention of the participants during a demo, since if the demo goes well the hands-on goes without any hiccups. I feel, a perfect demo is one that is a nice balance of detail and suspense. You provide the participants enough details so as to get them started on the hand-on,  but keep those things suspense that you feel they ought to find out through process of making a mistake and learning. This gives them a sense of achievement and that is what they actually yearn from the training although they might not themselves know it.

Feel free to comment on this post and add your thoughts on what you feel is a perfect demo.

Why I blog…

To be frank with you, I have been thinking about blogging from almost three years now…I know that’s a long time to think and some of you would be wondering why wait, just start blogging on some free blogging site such as Blogger or WordPress . But I wanted my own site. And now here I am writing my first blog on my very own site cognitive.co.in !

I wanted a place to put down my thoughts – at-least that was the initial idea behind blogging, but then I was also inspired by my training participants who pushed me to write technical blogs so that they could read what I had to say on some baffling or daunting technical topics.

Kindly read and comment on the blogs, your inputs would help me improve my thought process and also the content for future readers.

A nice entry
